CMA Turns 40! Carrie Picks Up Her 1st!
In spite of Faith Hill’s controversial reaction to the Female Vocalist winner, most folks would probably agree, Carrie Underwood deserved the title of belle of the ball on Monday night. In an otherwise lackluster broadcast, Carrie shone - literally (in a mini dress chosen by celeb stylist Trish Townsend) - with a kick-butt performance that had her stepping out of her good girl image. (Just don’t bend down to pick up that mic, Carrie!) “Before He Cheats” woke up an otherwise complacent audience and showed the audience that stepping out of one’s comfort zone as an artist can be very rewarding - to the tune of multiple CMA awards!
Brooks and Dunn won the Brooks & Dunn, er, Duo of the Year award for the sixtieth time, I’m told. Yawn. Eddie and Troy - y’all were robbed! I told them as much backstage. My buddy T-Roy said he didn’t care - the fans would still be there when Montgomery Gentry hits the road this week. True ‘nuff.
Whoever thought Keith Urban’s absence would be the most talked-about drama of the evening was dead wrong. And Kenny who?! The most popular category was the much-ballyhooed “Female Artist” category. While I had my eyes on Sara Evans during the reading of the nominees (glued-on smile, not-so-secret desire to win plastered all over her face), I missed Faith Hill’s is-she-kidding-or-on-something hissy fit. Too bad nobody else did. Good luck patching that one up, Faith spin doctors!
Martina shoulda picked up some hardware, though, with that kick-arse performance of “Anyway.” Simple set, simple production, simply unbelievable performance!
